Label Reports
What is a Label Report?
A Label Report provides right holders a view of the amount of tracks consumed / sales made (that they own) by your service within a specific period of time. It also breaks down your financial obligations in line with the agreement you have in place with them.\
Setup detailsFormats: Each label has their own layout - MassiveMusic will work with each individual label to ensure they receive the available data and calculations in a format which works for them.
Frequency: The report can be generated inline with label requirements on the following intervals - quarterly, monthly, weekly or daily.
Delivery Method: The preferred option is to deliver the report to a label specified FTP location or S3 bucket.
Financial models supported by MassiveMusic
MassiveMusic supports the following financial models for the purpose of royalty calculations back to rights holders. Each of the models detailed below will be defined within the deal terms/contractual agreements between the rights holder (label) and your service. MassiveMusic can assist a service in contract negotiations with rights holders.
1. Per Stream Rate
A Calculation based on the number of streams that have occurred during the reporting period.
Example
For May 2019 there were 1000 plays in total, of which 335 belong to Label X. Label X defined in
their agreement that the per-stream rate is $0.005.
Therefore, 335 (Label X Streams) * $0.005 (per-stream rate) = $1.675 (Label X per-stream royalty``
2. Fixed Subscriber Minimum
A label revenue calculation that is based solely on the number of subscribers/users/customers and does not take service revenue or label market share into consideration. It provides a floor for the value that each subscriber is worth to a particular label.
Example
For May 2019 there were 1000 subscribers in total to the service. It does not matter how many plays
were of Label X content. Label X defined in the agreement that fixed subscriber minimum is $1.75
Therefore, 1000 (number of fractional count subscribers/users/cust.) * $1.75 (fixed subscriber
minimum) = $1750 (Label X's fixed subscriber minimum amount due)
3. Revenue Share Percentage
The most common Label revenue calculation which determines a total label pool and then utilises the labels market share, for that particular service, country and plan-code; in order to determine the amount due. The label pool is calculated based on a percentage of the overall service Net revenue (ie subscription fee, ad-revenue, etc... minus any agreed costs or deductions). The amount due to a label is calculated by multiplying the label pool by the labels market share during a particular reporting period, for a particular service, country and plan-code.
Example
In May 2019 the service's gross revenue is $1000 and 50% usage was of Label X. The contractually
agreed revenue share percentage is 60%. Therefore, the Label X revenue calculation would be:
$1000 (net Rev.) * 60% (rev share percentage) = $600 (label pool)
$600 (label pool) * 50% (Label X Market Share) = $300 (Label X Rev Share amount due)
4. Per Subscriber Minimum
A label revenue calculation that is based on the number of subscribers/users/customers and the labels market share for a particular service, country and plan-code. The label pool is calculated based on the pro-rate share/fractional count of subscribers multiplied by the per subscriber minimum amount. The amount due to a label is calculated by multiplying the per sub label pool by the labels' market share during a particular reporting period, for a particular service, country and plan-code.
Example
In May 2019 a service has 1000 subscribers in a particular country and plan-code and Label X's
market share was calculated at 50%. The contractually agreed per subscriber minimum is
$4.50.Therefore, the Label X revenue calculation would be:
1000 (number of fractional count subscribers/users/cust.) * $4.50 (per subscriber minimum) = $4,500
(per sub Label Pool)
$4,500 (per sub Label Pool) * 50% (Label X Market Share) = $2,250 (Label X per subscriber
minimum amount due)
5. Fixed Monthly
A label revenue calculation that is based on a fixed amount payable monthly irrespective of usage.\
“Greater of” calculationsTwo or more of the models (1-4 listed above) will typically be used when calculating royalty payments for subscription streaming services. Major Labels often enforce a “greater of model”, which essentially requires MassiveMusic to perform royalty calculation across all models agreed with the label to find which model results in the highest revenue for them. The model which generates the highest revenue will be used to determine the royalty payable for your service within a given month.
